Moose on the Loose: Photos

It's hard to be a geologist sometimes... conferences in Paris, fieldwork in the Italian alps... after this hectic schedule I took a hard-earned break (ha!) and travelled around some of Switzerland last October. WOW! A small country but not one to be outdone for prolific national languages (4!), stunning scenery, and sheer tectonic uplift. Not to mention friendly people and very happy cows (with all the lovely musical clang of bells that that implies). I may well be looking for a post-doc here!!

I love Bern! Secret path under autumn leaves... Beautiful bridge over Bern's beautiful river View from Bern's church tower (geraniums...VERY continental!)
and THIS is the entrance to my hostel in Gimmelwald ...coolest place I've ever stayed!! Chamois!!!! teeming across the mountain as I walked up
the chamois and I cross paths Looking back down the valley I came up to the Eiger (left), the Jungfrau (right), and the one in the middle whose name I always forget Looking The Other Way
Nice wanderweg The Eiger seen from the top of the Schilthorn Choucas!!! - the lovely mountain birds translated (perhaps dubiously?) by Wikipedia as "jackdaw"
Self portrait just before snow & lack of companions forced a cable car ride for the last few hundred metres Nice geomorphology (with a backdrop of classic mountaineering routes) Ohhhhh to be a choucas!
Happy choucas (they always look like they're having fun!) Cloud-parallel choucas Did I mention I like birds?
Looking back towards Gimmelwald from the funicular train to Jungfraujoch Nice geomorphology on the way up The Eiger, shortly before the train disappears to tunnel up through it!
Glacier from Junfraujoch (a very high place served by a train. VERY continental) Apparently the fluffy feathers of this choucas are called "doona" in German, making the Australian word for duvet seem just fractionally less bizarre I walked down from just below the Eiger, check out the train!
People are small... the Eiger is NOT! Well, let's try and fence it in anyway... Signs on the way down
Self-portrait #2: "Mystorii Zoonu" Ah, the juxtaposition Self-portrait #3: "The madness of snowmaking"
Feeling at home as I start out from Zermatt towards the Matterhorn! Said Matterhorn Awesome glacier next to the Monte Rosa (to the left)
More chamois! On a precipitous glacier-side path Cairns & the Monte Rosa, from 3100m!! As Mo Turnbull once said, "It's real bicycle country up there"
Self-portrait #4: "Taken by a random, gatecrashed by a choucas" Church type thing at 3100m Very James Bond
Matterhorn seen from Zermatt Castle in Bellinzona, Ticino (the Italian part of Svizzera!) Good gracious, your ramparts are audacious
A good tree to read a book under (and I did) Said tree peeks alluringly from behind a rather classique doorway A second castle! With grapevines!
I never worked out the singnificance of the wriggly red line The reading tree, and its capacious lawn Un espresso, per favore
Il castello Steps in the air Last view of Bellinzona
